We are pleased to announce the debut performance of the Vancouver Jazz Orchestra (VJO), a 15-piece ensemble committed to presenting a diverse range of world-class "Big Band" music to Vancouver audiences and highlighting the wealth of talent in our city's music scene.

This inaugural concert will feature the music of Duke Ellington, perhaps the most prolific and influential composer of the big band genre. Known for a lifetime of swinging, soulful and melodic compositions, Duke's career exemplified the balance of artistic integrity and entertainment with compositions that looked as much to the past as they did toward the future. For all of these reasons, Ellington's music seemed like a fantastic way to kick things off.

The VJO will also draw from the past to celebrate the rich history of big band music while continuing to work with the finest artists of today and tomorrow, both locally and internationally. Looking ahead to future concert seasons full of jubilant swing, contemporary masterpieces, and funky blues, the VJO marks an exciting new chapter in the city's cultural landscape, showcasing Vancouver's finest to celebrate this rich and exciting music.

This performance has been made possible by the generous support of THE MUSIC PERFORMANCE TRUST FUND
